Things get more exciting in the Sterling Bank sponsored Spirited Actor TV series

Did you catch episode 4 of the Sterling Bank sponsored Spirited Actor TV reality series last week?
Nigerian contestants - Tunji, Nike, Aisha, Ladun, and July constantly bring life and drama to the house and that’s certainly fun to watch.

The ten contestants in New York wake up to Yoga classes, enjoy road trips to South Beach, Miami, even getting to stroll down the iconic Ocean Drive- famous movie setting for almost every blockbuster Hollywood movie ever watched.

The Intimacy Challenge showed it wasn't all fun and no work as the housemates were forced to call-up intense emotions within seconds for celebrity acting coach Tracy Moore.

The next episode promises to be a tense one to watch as one contestant is sure to get evicted. The prize of a one-year acting career with a Hollywood Agent and the chance of starring in a movie with Hollywood celeb-actor, Morris Chestnut must definitely become the fate of one of these actors.

Follow the series on Africa Magic Entertainment on Sunday at 20:00 CAT and 19:00 CAT from Sunday May 26th or on Africa Magic from Saturday August 4th at 20:30 CAT.

COSON Week explodes with The Nigerian music machine

An important part of the events of the much-advertised COSON Week 2013 which from May 19 to 25 will be the publication of the Nigerian music machine, a 300-page full gloss magazine. The publication will contain never before seen photographs and text, tracking the highpoints of key aspects of the effervescent Nigerian music industry, the people, institutions and brands driving the industry.

Thousands will get to read the magazine during the week and after. During the COSON Week press conference held in Lagos on February 5, a dummy of the magazine was unveiled and Nigerian veteran rap act, Ruggedman, said in a video presentation that; “The Nigerian music machine will be food for the eyes, a collectors’ item that will be read for many years.

Every article is being written by a writer who knows his onions. The Nigerian music machine will provide records, information and entertainment not available anywhere else. It will be the authoritative reference material on the industry”.

The fascinating cover design, depicts a machine-like or robotic presentation of a performer that appears to be 2Face Idibia. Among the several features of the magazine is the foldable cover and centre pages that allow the possibility of four-page and three-page spreads because of the special design.

Speaking on the magazine, COSON Chairman, Chief Tony Okoroji said; “In line with the standard we have set for everything associated with the COSON Week, the magazine will be without equal. We are not cutting any corners”. The week will involve a series of programmes, involving every facet of the entertainment industry in the nation, to celebrate the blossoming music industry in Nigeria.

Personality Of The Week: Fela Anikulapo Kuti

Fela Anikulapo Kuti

Fela Anikulapo Kuti, born in Abeokuta, Nigeria on the 15th October 1938, was a multi-instrumentalist musician and composer, pioneer of Afrobeat music, human rights activist, and politician.

His mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, was a feminist activist in the anti-colonial movement; his father, Reverend Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, a Protestant minister and school principal, was the first president of the Nigeria Union of Teachers. Fela was also a first cousin to the Nigerian writer and Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, the first African to win a Nobel Prize for Literature.

Fela was sent to London in 1958 to study medicine but decided to study music instead at the Trinity College of Music. While there, he formed the band Koola Lobitos, playing a fusion of jazz and highlife. In 1960, Fela married his first wife, Remilekun (Remi) Taylor, with whom he would have three children (Femi, Yeni, and Sola).

In 1967, he went to Ghana to think up a new musical direction. That was when Kuti first called his music Afrobeat.

When he returned to his homeland Fela set up a nightclub in the Empire Hotel, named the Afro-Spot and then the Afrika Shrine, where he performed regularly. He also changed the name of his band to Afrika 70 (and later to Egypt 80). His bands traditionally included the typical huge line-up consisting of many singers and dancers, numerous saxophonists, trumpeteers, drummers, percussionists, and of course, many guitarists blending African rhythms and jazz horn lines with politicized song lyrics.

In 1977, Fela and the Afrika '70 released the album Zombie, a scathing attack on Nigerian soldiers using the zombie metaphor to describe the methods of the Nigerian military.

Fela was severely beaten, and his elderly mother was thrown from a window, causing fatal injuries. The Kalakuta Republic (Fela's commune) was set ablaze, and Fela's studio, instruments, and master tapes were destroyed. Fela's response to the attack was to deliver his mother's coffin to the Dodan Barracks in Lagos, General Olusegun Obasanjo's residence, and to write two songs, "Coffin for Head of State" and "Unknown Soldier", referencing the official inquiry that claimed the commune had been destroyed by an unknown soldier.

Kuti continued his outspoken attacks on the Nigerian government. When the people returned to power in 1979, Kuti began his own political party - MOP (Movement of the People). The military returned to power in 1983 and within the year Kuti was sentenced to five years in prison on a spurious currency smuggling charge. He was released in 1986 after yet another change of government.

Fela Anikulapo Kuti died on Saturday, August 2, 1997, at 4pm (local time) in Lagos, Nigeria. It had been rumoured for some time that Fela had a serious illness he was refusing treatment for, many said he was suffering from prostate cancer. But as it turns out, Fela died from complications due to AIDS. As Fela's brother, Olikoye Ransome Kuti, said at a news conference:

"The immediate cause of death of Fela was heart failure, but there were many complications arising from the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome".

Fela was a man with great influence in the African music world, he is irreplaceable and his presence will be sorely misssed.
